Leash Safety

Dogs can escape while on walks because they were able to back out of their collar, or their leash slips out of our hands.

We’ve discussed the benefits of using a martingale style collar to prevent your dog from slipping out of its collar.

If the option of attaching the leash to your belt doesn’t suit you, there is a way to loop it securely to your wrist or lower arm. This is an option that allows you the use of both hands while keeping your dog secure.

I will show you an extremely simple, quick method of attaching your dog using your existing dog’s leash (because we’re not using the retractable type, right?).

As precaution, for anyone with compromised wrists or balance, this may not be the best alternative, however with a reasonable harness that discourages pulling, you may enjoy the security of this method.

You can do this while the dog is attached to the end of the leash and can be undone quickly and easily. This will work with any fabric style of leash. This also can be done with multiple leashes.

Holding the looped end, pull the leash through the loop/handle far enough to make an opening big enough to fit your hand. Once your hand and arm are through, pull on the leash to cinch.

I like to use my free hand pick up dog waste, and when needed, quickly gather the leashes and pull the dogs closer. The saying of keeping someone on a short leash does have its merit. I feel I have less control when there's too much slack and distance from me to the dog.
